The Coal Exchange in Cardiff always represented something special to me during the last 13 years that I’ve been in this town.
From initial meets with companies there, where I pitched my wares, got commissioned and subsequently hotdesked for a short period of time, through to using the exterior/interior for photoshoots and finally back to having a room as a store room during the final few months of this amazing building’s continued development.
These pics were shot whilst being one of the last to leave – a snapshot of this amazing building in limbo. Neither abandoned, nor occupied. Building work had already begun around some areas of the building. It was like walking around a strange ghost town, with the odd builder to remind you that something was changing.
From being the first place in Wales for a million pound cheque, to an organically nurtured creative hub in the noughties, it’s now time for its next phase of life! Whatever is happening, I’m glad that finally the building is being re-invested into – otherwise, as you may be able to tell from some of the photos, the wrecking ball may have soon been on its way!
