Memomix - a mix of forgotten broadcasts
Hi I’m Sam. I’m kinda new here.
And this is Memomix, 20 minutes-or-so of tape snippets I recorded off the radio ages ago.
Let me explain what’s going on here.
So Alex asked me to put together a mix for this blog. My first thought was to do a rundown of the top 10 tracks I've heard in the 10 years I've been doing my music blog, Ceefax Of Life. But then I realised that I don't actually own a lot of the music on that list, for I am a walking cliche of a millennial with my streaming, and flat whites, and being OK with the EU.
BTW - if you're interested in what made that top 10 then here's a YouTube Playlist and here’s most of it on Spotify - seems like DJ Falcon & Thomas Bangalter’s Together is missing from that streamy boy.
Instead I looked at what do I own, and I figured I could do something with this shoebox of tapes.
Taped from the radio around 2002-3, it's mainly mixes from The Breezeblock and other late night Radio 1 output of the time; shows like Gilles Peterson, The Blue Room, Fabio & Grooverider, One World etc. I used to listen to these tapes as I walked to school or walked Daisy, my old dog.
I then made the arbitrary decision to record one minute from each tape into Audacity to create a hotchpotch mix thing. I dug out my old Walkman, which was perfect for the task. It has two headphone outputs, so I could listen and record at the same time and it can play tapes with the lid fully open.
I’m a big fan of watching the spools go, would recommend, it’s well zen. Next I found a cable that I think I got with a Stylophone to connect the Walkman from one headphone socket to the microphone socket on my wife's laptop. The last bit of equipment I needed was our kitchen timer to keep it to roughly a minute per tape.
Here's the result, Memomix - 20 excerpts of music and snatches of mixes that was broadcast 16-17 years ago.
Is the result listenable? Technically yes. Have you heard this selection of music this way before? Probably not. Will anybody ask me to do this again? Absolutely not.
