Lights, camera, science! ‘The science behind’ Genesis Biosciences probiotics

The shoot involved myself (Meg) and Alex (Creative Director) - we donned our masks and gloves and headed into a room of invention and endless possibilities…

I’m talking, of course, about the Genesis Biosciences laboratory. A place where friendly bacteria are morphed into all-powerful dirt-fighting beasties, colonising surfaces and literally suffocating the bad guys. On a microscopic level, it’s pretty dramatic - but in reality it’s a pretty serene place to be.

We were there to film the video content for a new marketing campaign we’re soon running, showcasing ‘the science behind’ the products Genesis Biosciences create. As our long-standing client of 5+ years, we’re almost experts on what Genesis do and how they do it. Our challenge is to bring that to wider audiences, and highlight why the cleaning products made by these scientists will help the environment & won’t harm your health (looking at you, bleach).

Video interviews with the experts

Dr. Chris Charles

Dr. Chris Charles - loves a good pose

We filmed with Dr. Emma Saunders (General Manager - Europe), Dr. Chris Charles (Research Scientist) and Dr. Phil Caunt (Research & Development Specialist) to ‘extract’ the science.

Chris’ focus was on probiotics - otherwise known as live bacteria strains (or Bacillus) that help to compose the fluid of a Genesis cleaning product. These are the tiny little bugs that safely clean surfaces, or fabrics, or objects, by taking over the surface.

Most of Genesis’ products are ‘probiotic’, with the company having pioneered the technology several years ago.

We also interviewed Phil about ‘probiotic power’; what it means, why it beats harsh chemicals, and how they benefit the environment.

As Genesis have spent much of 2020 developing & releasing COVID-19-beating sanitisers, we interviewed Emma on their new independently tested product range, and how we - the public - can find out if a disinfectant truly works.

Behind-the-scenes photography

‘If you don’t take pictures for your social channels, were you ever really there?’

With that chilling thought in mind, Alex swept (safely) around the labs and took shots of Tanya and Alessandra (the 2 scientists working that day) as they prodded things and stirred test tubes and did other laboratory tasks.

The great thing about behind-the-scenes photos for blogs & social is that you don’t actually need a DSLR; using an iPhone is a perfect replacement, and shows a ‘real’ softer side to your team online… ideal for real content for your channels!

Telling a company story with video

As businesses grow & evolve, their story does too. We took the opportunity to film an ‘About us’ video with Emma while in the lab - a one-stop-shop elevator pitch in 2m 30secs.

These kinds of videos are crucial, with long-lasting power - this video alone can live:

  • On your homepage

  • On your About page

  • As your YouTube/Vimeo channel intro

  • Featured in your Facebook Videos tab

  • In your IGTV

  • As shorter clips within social posts

  • As the headline story in your next newsletter

  • Linked in your global website footer

Summary wrap-up

Here’s lookin’ at you, bugs.

Altogether, Alex and I were filming with the Genesis team for approx 3 hours, covering a broad range of questions and FAQ-style topics with 3 different scientists.

Doing the maths, that’s…

  • 2 burningred team members

  • 3 hours on-site

  • 3 scientists interviewed

  • 4 feature-length final videos

  • 20+ minutes of B-roll videography for use in all future videos

  • 25 ‘bitesize’ final videos

  • 40+ minutes of interview footage

  • 80+ photos featuring the team & lab environment

  • Quotes, soundbites and transcripts we can use forever

Not a bad day out of the office…

Filming with clients during COVID-19 has been a challenge - not impossible, but definitely trickier. With extra precautions in place and our own studio policy, the devil is in the detail and the planning, for sure.

Thanks to Emma, Chris, Phil, Tanya and Alessandra at Genesis Biosciences for their stellar contributions & safe approach; they’ve shown businesses can still make great video content in difficult circumstances. Now, on to the editing…!
